Does Prilosec (omeprazole) cause? Our users weigh in.

If you have used Prilosec (omeprazole) and experienced an increase or decrease in acne, please tell us about it here. Be sure to include as much information as possible, including when you started taking Prilosec, the dosage, other side effects you experienced, and anything else that might be relevant. Acne is sometimes a side effect of prescription drug usage, but other times it has to do with hard-to-track-down lifestyle changes, bacteria in your gut, or nutrient deficiency. In our experience, the best way to treat acne is by eliminating sugar, flour, dairy, caffeine, and vegetable oils from your diet. Supplementing zinc, vitamin b complex, boron, melatonin, and SOD is likely to help as well.

Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor used to treat heartburn. If you are experiencing heartburn, there is a relatively good chance that it’s caused by your lifestyle and diet. Plenty of research shows that heartburn, like acne is an inflammatory condition. Often people suffering from one suffer from the other. And if you start medicating, your acne may get worse as your body reacts to a foreign substance. You can almost always improve your acne (and heartburn) by eating a diet high in fat, low in carbs, and with a medium amount of protein. Avoid sugar at all costs. Don’t eat processed foods. And let us know about your experience in the comments.

  1. Started taking omeprazole twice daily for an ulcer a week ago, have noticed a huge improvement in my jaw and neck acne, even though this is the time of month it is usually at its worst. Also started zyrtec daily for allergies same time, so not sure if this can be attributed to both or neither, perhaps coincidence.

  2. I’ve had terrible acne since I was a teenager. I’m now 29 and have have tried everything out there for acne, including prescription pills and creams, and nothing works to clear it up. About a month and a half ago I started taking Omeprazole for GERD. Two weeks ago I noticed that my acne had pretty much completely cleared up. My face is now completely clear for the first time since I was 11! I don’t know if it’s due to the Omeprazole, but I haven’t changed anything else.

  7. 27 year old female – I’ve struggled with acne since I was about 21 when I decided to stop taking birth control. When I started taking omeprazole for my severe acid reflux my skin cleared up and my pores appeared smaller. Every time I have taken a break from the omeprazole my pores get big and I break out like crazy, even if I supplement with ranitidine to help with the rebound acid that happens when you stop a ppi.
